MHS Happenings at a Glance

January 11th, 2013:

The Manitoba Herpetocultural Society is a not-for-profit community based organization that promotes conservation of wild reptiles and amphibians as well as education and proper husbandry of pet reptiles and amphibians. As a community, we feel that the proposed "Responsible Pet Ownership By-Law" as released by the City of Winnipeg on January 10th, 2013 does not meet the needs or desires of pet ownership in Winnipeg.

This draft By-Law severely limits the choices that Winnipeg citizens can make in choosing a pet by arbitrarily dictating "acceptable" pets without due diligence in regards to consultation with citizens and affected parties (both individual and business). The list provided in Schedule "A" limits the freedoms of ordinary law-abiding citizens, without addressing the problems associated with the previous Exotic Pet By-Law No. 3389/83. By proposing the list of "acceptable" species of birds, mammals and reptiles, the City of Winnipeg is admitting ignorance and a lack of education of the pet trade in Winnipeg.

By adopting a By-Law based on species (which in some cases are not properly defined in the draft By-Law), the City of Winnipeg will require additional resources and money - such as officers and training - to enforce it.

The MHS, its members and affiliates proposes and supports a reptile By-Law based on size of species (as described by PIJAC) which would allow freedom in the selection of a pet reptile in Winnipeg, while also being extremely easy for the Animal Services Agency to enforce. This By-Law would still ban potentially dangerous animals, such as crocodilians and venomous species, ensuring the safety of the citizens of Winnipeg.

May 7, 2012:

The MHS was at the Narcisse Snake Pits on Saturday and Sunday, May 5th and 6th. There were lots of snakes and lots of people there to see the snakes! We talked to people from Germany, Mexico and Australia educating them about the garter snakes and answering questions. Someone even found a teeny tiny little baby red belly snake! We'll be back out there on Saturday and Sunday, May 12th and 13th so stop by and say hi when you come check out the snakes.

April 27, 2012:

A reminder to check out the MHS at the upcoming MRBE at the Winnipeg Convention Centre on September 8th and 9th, 2012!

It is that time again. Your current BOD have been serving for a year now. One of the plaforms we ran on was annual elections for all positions. As such, we are once again opening the floor for nominations for the BOD and Admin positions. See the membership section of the forums for details.

June 21, 2010:

Welcome to the new MHS forums! Please remember to register and to send cryptwpg (Daemon) a pm in order to get your former status restored. If post count means a lot, he can transfer that over as well but only if you register under the same name as before.

June 15, 2010:

Narcisse was a great success, our next newsletter is about to be printed, the new forums go up in a week and we have have a barbecue scheduled for June 26th! All that and more over the next month in the MHS.

When the new forums go up, you will have to go through the membership registration process again. For those who are moderators, paid advertisers or paid members, please send Daemon (cryptwpg) a pm once you are registered and he will adjust your access accordingly.

Because the new forums are hosted in a new location, please set this page as your new favorite since we will be adding a new archive button to view the old forums and updating our look to match the new forums.

Apr. 27, 2010:

The dates for our Narcisse get togethers have been finalized. The MHS will be at the Narcisse snake dens (Hwy 17 North of Winnipeg) on May 8th and 15th, 2010 from 10am-3pm. We will likely have members located at the major pits with hand sanitizers and informational pamphlets as well as be selling drinks and chips to the public. Come check it out! For those unaware, this period is when tens of thousands of red sided garter snakes emerge from their dens to mate, meaning the public can see the largest collection of snakes visible at any one time in the world!

Mar. 15, 2010:

Our new newsletter has been mailed out to our paid membership and the new member cards will follow shortly (good for discounts at several Manitoba pet stores). We have also begun our latest photo contest (see forums for details).

For those of you looking to socialize with some of us, check out our next rib night at Tony Roma's on Pembina (Winnipeg) @ 8pm on Thursday, March 25th, 2010. I'm sure at least one of us will be wearing an MHS shirt so we should be easy to recognize.

As well, our Paypal account is now set up for those wishing to renew their 2009 memberships which expire at the end of this month. See the Membership section of the forums for details.

Rob from the BOD has been in touch with Manitoba Conservation and we are in the process of organizing our first outing of 2010, the Narcisse garter snake dens in May. More details will be posted in the forums section as we get closer to that date.

If you need access, please contact me at daemon@manitobaherp.com and I will attempt to set up an account for you.

Coffee, softdrinks and snacks will be provided. More information will be forthcoming as we get closer to the event.

As well, the MHS is preparing to update its forums software to better service our members and guests alike. As such, there may be some down times over the next month as we prepare to transfer our database to its new home so please bear with us.

For those that wish to meet with some of the MHS members in advance of the AGM and hang out, we have an informal meeting for wings, riblings and beer at the Tony Roma's on Pembina Hwy on Thursday, February 11th at 8pm. Sorry, adults only for this one.

May 28, 2008:

On the 17th of May a group of people from the MHS attended the Narcisse snake pits. The weather was challenging but it was still an awesome time!

While walking the trails we finally began to see the snakes that thought they could hide from expert snake hunters like us lol! Den one was a little bit sparse but still really neat to see the limestone cave that they have been living in for hundreds of years.

We kept on wandering the trails looking forward to the next den and when we arrived we saw even more snakes, it was almost like they were making a show for us.

Den three was amazing in light of the weather we saw several mating balls. Those snakes didn't seem to mind the weather at all. I found it amazing to see that even with all the wind and rain we all manged to get along and enjoy each others company. People did have a hard time keeping up with me but everyone made an effort. I think that overall it was a time I will remember fondly. Thanks to Rich,Ashley and Amanda for the hard work that went into organizing and planning this event as well to the MHS for keeping this an annual event. With the continued growth of the MHS I know that we will have some fantastic future events! Thanks again to all that made the long drive there and made it a time to remember!

A bruiser of a day with low spring temperatures and a lot of wind. The snakes like our own membership were driven to be there though. Thanks to Amanda for stepping up and working hard to keep the event organised.

From all reports there were still plenty of smiles to go around. The threat of rain couldn't even douse the enthusiasm of this crew.

Melanie won the draw of a $25 gift certificate for the Petland Superstore.

People brought friends, kids and family which is just like we want it. It all made up for a great group. Rich and Ashley were responsible for much of the ground work that lead up to the meeting. Thanks to them for the time they invested.
